Smart MEIJI NEWS:

> 3 - 4 March : 4th Contactless and security workshops held in Tokyo, Japan.

After a one and half year period of regular meetings, the co-operation was mature enough to take a step further.

Co-operation will go from technological exchange to the creation of common tools with the preparation of a common Europe/ Japan Protection profile.

Japan is deploying the JUKI resident card in 700 cities. A mobile phone with contactless smart card interface is developed. Further co-operation will focus on contactless security and high speed communication.

Mr Colasanti from the EU commission has met NMDA representatives in Tokyo. The Smart Meiji project future is on the agenda for the discussion.

A new Contactless Technology website is going to be launched very soon in the framework of the dissemination plan.

This document investigates potential threats applying to contactless chipcards. The new documents finalised by SINCE participants should stimulate the smart card community to invest more in contactless technology especially in the field of security. In order to better take into account the specifities of the contactless technology, proposed modification of relevant protection profiles are listed at the end of the document.

ISCAN meeting at CTST is scheduled on the afternoon of May 12 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.

The agenda is ambitious: issue a report on Government issued credentials in the zones covered by the Associations, discuss and compare smart card shipment figures for the past year, exchange ideas on future research opportunities.

A press conference on May 13 will present the results of the working session.

News from the network

- Smart Card Alliance announces its next conference on July 15 in Arlington VA - Smart Cards in Government.

- Smart Card Forum of China in its March Newsletter issue relates the increase of 25% phone subscribers in China since January with the fastest growing business coming from mobile telecom sector (52% of the total telecom revenue).
The total number of mobile phone subscribers will surpass the total number of stationed phones in China by the second quarter of 2003.

-ACT Canada announces first nationally available VISA credit card with a chip. The Royal Bank of Canada VISA Platinum chip card will provide greater security to its holders.
For the Association, the smart card, like in Europe and Japan, will also become the natural evolution of the payment card market.

Eurosmart General Assembly is hosted by Oberthur Card Systems in Nanterre. A new Chairman will be elected and Lutz Martiny will highlight his four years mandate. Eurosmart CEOs and Communication Managers will validate the Association new strategy.
