EUROSMART participated to the Public audition organised by the European Parliament on 2nd March to discuss the introduction of biometrics identifiers in visa and passports in Europe.

The Association representative, Christoph Schiller asked the Parliament and the Commission to work closer with the industry in order to adopt secure and viable solutions for the future.

The Parliament asked for a complementary report on data protection before validating both regulations after summer.

 
     

EUROSMART presented its recommendations on the European Commission proposed legal framework for electronic payments, together with 103 other European structures, banks, consumer and retailers associations, national administrations.

Olivier Piou, Chairman of Eurosmart, met the team of the Directorate General in charge of financial services and payments on 31 March. Eurosmart contribution was well perceived and better understood. The European Commission will involve Eurosmart experts in the improvement of the legal harmonisation of the evaluation of security of payment systems.

During Euroindia Smart Cards Exhibition held in New Delhi on 24 - 26 March, Frederic Trojani from Axalto represented EUROSMART and made a presentation at the session Security issues in the IT Security & Data Protection

 

EUROSMART Meetings

-General Assembly on 16 April in Brussels

- Market and Technology Working Group has finalised 2003 Smart Card Shipment figures and 2004 Forecast. Eurosmart Chairman Olivier Piou will present these figures at CTST in Washington.

- New Working Group will be launched on April 15 in Brussels. The new Test Tool WG will focus on the definition of Interoperability of Certification Frameworks for Smart Cards Systems, test plan, test cases and evaluation procedures

 

EUROSMART is leading a certification initiative called ISCI.

ISCI working groups met in March to continue to improve together the evaluation process of IT products linked to smart cards.

European Certification bodies were invited to describe the new organisation of the Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement (CCRA) management Committee to implement and provide guidance for issuing Common Criteria Certificates.

The structure is now composed of specific working groups: composition, EAL5, assurance continuity, ADV, Terminology in order to prepare the updated version of the CC to be validated at the end of the year. CCIMB is in charge of understanding the whole CC methodology and interpretations. Eurosmart and the ISCI consortium was formally asked to contribute to the new documents.

The eEurope Smart Cards Initiative was designed to accelerate and harmonise the development and use of Smart Card across Europe.

It led to the creation of a strong expert community and various pilot projects and standardisation inititiatives.

NEWS from the Network:

- Smart Card Alliance: Smart Cards in Government Conference in March was a success gathering more than 300 participants (40% government representatives and 60% industry).
The Association has finalised its report on Secure Identification Systems: Building a chain of trust (available on the Alliance’s web site).

- Smart Card Society of Southern Africa newsletter informs about the joint venture between Xantium Technology and Digital Card Systems to print and produce smart cards in South Africa from the end of March.

- Smart Card Forum of China relates the first working group meeting of RFID national standards in February showing the importance and rise of the technology and applications worldwide.

March Newsletter from Frank Xu also presents the various bank cards issued in China during the last two months.
