Eurosmart General Assembly, 20 April 2006, Brussels
A new chairman will be elected in the General Assembly to succeed Olivier Piou, CEO of Axalto. The Smart Card Industry will deliver its 2005 figures and forecast for 2006 in a press conference.

Our guest speaker Prof. Dr. Reinhard Posch, Federal Chief Information Officer of the Austrian Chancellery and chairman of the eID Roadmap workshop for the European Commission, will give a presentation on eID and eGovernment issues in Europe during the annual cocktail following the General Assembly.

Eurosmart members had a meeting in March with Mr Jean-Paul Gauzes, Member of the European Parliament, rapporteur on the New Legal Framework for Payments. Mr Gauzes listened to the position of the smart card industry regarding evaluation and certification of the security of payment products and systems. His report will be available in May and discussed inside the Parliament in June.

Eurosmart has presented its recommendations on the European Driving licence Directive to the Ministers of transports. Ministers reached a political agreement on the text on 27 March 2006. A single format (plastic card) is to be available in Europe leaving to Member States the possibility to insert a chip. Eurosmart position insists on the availability and interoperability of the technology.
