EUROSMART welcomes 2 new members

NedCard is a sub-contractor for pre-assembly and assembly services for micro-modules used in contact Smart Cards, Contact-less Smart Cards and RF Transponders.

Nedcard will contribute to Eurosmart activities as a representative of a new trend in the business, professional assembly companies.

Bundesdruckerei privatised in November 2000, supplies national and international customers with identification documents, high-security cards, banknotes, postage and revenue stamps as well as all kinds of electronic publications.

The intention of Bundesdruckerei participation in Eurosmart is to work actively on standards and development based on smart cards.

EUROSMART members are taking all security issues very seriously and they are working continuously to design and manufacture products to the "state of the art" security level. Appropriate actions and methodologies are developed to anticipate future attacks.

Eurosmart work is publicly available and presented to the main market actors, including survey on security evaluation methods, Protection Profile surveys, list of certified products (new elements will be posted on the site in December: FAQ section on security and other issues, new updated page on Protection Profile and certified products).

EUROSMART Security experts have undertaken a survey on Security evaluation procedures. The industry wishes to adopt a coherent approach towards smart cards and ICs certification. The multiplication of security evaluation schemes in the payment sector does not contribute to improve the security of products. The industry asks banking organisations to consider the best evaluation method for their payment cards. Eurosmart members recommend agreeing on accepting a global scheme that fully covers and includes all expectations while addressing the largest scope of security requirements.

Eurosmart recommends that a product already certified against a methodology widely covering all aspects of security like the Common Criteria be accepted by all concerned institutions and associations, particularly those in the banking area.

Eurosmart recommendations for site security certification

Around 16 different schemes exist for the same site only for the payment sector. Eurosmart proposals to improve the situation: Unify the standards, agree on general audit conditions, approve accredited procedure and accredited auditors (rules exist in ISO – Guide 62), organise and publicise approval.

International Smart Cards Association Network

News from the Network

- ACT Canada announces that the Toronto Transit Commission's tokens, paper tickets and transfers could be collectors' items as its vice-chairman confirmed the move to join the province's regional transit "smart card" plan in just five years.

The cards themselves, with a microchip embedded, will be used like credit cards, with cash uploaded via vending machines or the Internet. The right combination of fares is charged to the user automatically, whether the card is used on a bus in York Region or a subway downtown.

- Internal news from Smart Card Alliance: The Secure Personal ID Task Force is currently selecting its next project. The new Task Force report, "Logical Access Security: The Role of Smart Cards in Strong Authentication," is available for download from the Alliance members-only web site and from the Alliance online storefront.

The Terminal and eTransaction Infrastructure Task Force is currently working on its new project - a report on consumer payment with mobile devices. There has been excellent member interest in forming new technology or market councils.

Next ISCAN meeting is scheduled 11 April 2005 during CTST in Las Vegas
