Eurosmart at Cartes 2006 – Perspective of Enlargement and new missions

All Eurosmart members’ CEOs gathered during Cartes 2006 on 8 November, demonstrating that the highest level inside Companies relies on Eurosmart to promote their industry. They decided to enlarge the scope and the missions of Eurosmart and to strengthen Eurosmart label as a reference in the smart security world for customers, governments and the industry itself. CEOs also endorsed the launch of a Vision Paper that will present the evolution of the smart card technology by 2020.

Eurosmart Chaiman Jacques Seneca held a well attended press conference to deliver Eurosmart figures for 2006 and 2007 forecast. More than 3.2 billions cards have been shipped in 2006 and 3.7 billions are expected for 2007. In 2006, the activity of the smart card industry has increased by 27% and should continue its growth at a 20% rate in 2007.

Jacques Seneca opened the Sesames Awards Ceremony by pre-announcing forecasted figures for 2006 and 2007 and by encouraging innovation in a constantly changing digital world.

Around 200 visitors came to Eurosmart booth and showed interest in our activities, figures and future Vision Paper 2020.

For its 21st edition Cartes 2006 set a new record by welcoming 475 exhibitors and 19 576 visitors (+ 6% vs. 2005) representing 139 countries. Eurosmart as sponsor of this event for the 7th year confirms its position as the Industry’s Voice.

 
 

Eurosmart experts at EU conferences

Eurosmart expressed the ideas of the smart card industry at the conference entitled “Maintaining the integrity of identities and payments: Two challenges for fraud prevention" on 23 November 2006 in Brussels.

Eurosmart participated to the Fraud Prevention Expert Group meeting on 28 November 2006, where the migration to chip cards in Payment in the EU was again stated as an efficient mean to combat fraud. EMV roll out (smart cards for payment interoperable in Europe) represents 50% of all available cards and 57% of ATM.

Porvoo Meeting – 29 November 2006
Eurosmart took part to the first meeting of the eID subgroup of the Porvoo Group that commented the provisional version of the Roadmap for a pan-European eIDM framework and the Common specifications for interoperable EU eIDM.

> EUROSMART VISION PAPER

Already more than 100 contributions to the questionnaire open until the end of the year!

Experts, industrialists, academics and issuers are welcomed to share their vision on the future of smart card technology by answering the questionnaire.

The results of the consultation process will be analysed in January and February 2007. An Editing Committee, gathering a representative panel of key actors in the field, will meet soon to prepare the Vision Paper to be released in March 2007.

KARTA 2006 Polish-International Smart Card Summit, 6- 7 December 2006, Warsaw, Poland

The KARTA is Eastern Europe’s major event gathering card issuers, manufacturers of equipments and components for card production, IT system and personalization systems providers, operators of network security, etc. The forum is held together with the International Exhibition of Card Technology and Services.

Jacques Seneca will introduce the first session “Cards are our future- today and tomorrow on the car market in Europe and Poland” on 6 December at 10.30 am.

OMNICARD 2007 - January 17th - 19th, 2007

The conference programme covers the wide range of smart card application fields and presents top speakers from Germany and abroad.

All partners attended the meeting on 9 November to discuss the need to set up a common glossary of smart card technology at worldwide level to avoid the misuse of terms such as Contactless and RFID.

Smart Card Alliance explained their position and campaign regarding a governmental decision for the US citizen cards to be released for travelling in the Western Hemisphere. ISCAN members will meet again at CTST in May 2007.
