Eurosmart contributes in the eID roadmap (electronic identity in eGovernment applications) workshop initiated by the European Commission on 27 January 2006. EICTA, Eurochambre, EEMA and Eurosmart were the industry contributors meeting Member States representatives to agree on a common agenda to accelerate the implementation of a European eID model.

Eurosmart insisted on the necessity of common standards and use of European Citizen Card requirements nearly finalised inside CEN dedicated working group. Conclusions of the eID roadmap meeting will be presented at the eGovernment conference in Vienna on 10 February organised by the Austrian Presidency. Eurosmart and high-level representatives of the smart card industry are attending the event. Austria has already implemented various citizen cards initiatives: eSignature and health insurance applications.

 

ENISA, the European Agency for the security of information network is currently preparing a document on the various authentication levels and mechanisms used in Europe. A meeting is to be organised with the agency on this issue. In such context, Eurosmart position is to promote smartcard as the perfect tool for authentication in the digital environment. Eurosmart will promote the concept to Member States still studying various options.

 

Eurosmart is creating an environment expert group to study the compliance of the industry towards environmental regulations and engage a dialogue with issuers/operators on collection, waste and recycling issues.

 

Eurosmart is preparing technical recommendations on the European electronic driving licence. A Directive proposal in on the table of Transport Ministers who will discuss the issue on 27 March 2006.

ISCAN

Catherine Johnston, chairwoman of the association, had invited newcomers and guest speakers, the Asia Pacific Smart Card Forum (Australia, New Zealand) SmartEX Association and Kevin Gillick, Chairman of Global Platform.

www.iscan.ca is the web portal for smart card associations around the world and important events and information about the industry will regularly be posted. A members area is also available to exchange valuable documents on technical or political issues – a new logo is adopted.
