Vision Paper 2020 - First meeting of the Editing Committee

An editing committee gathering the best experts of the smart card technology is now working on the Vision Paper 2020 driven by Jane Adams, a free lance journalist with a very good knowledge of the sector and Xavier Larduinat, from the Marketing Department of Gemalto. The document is intended to decision makers and the general public (end consumers, national and local governments, journalists) and will explain the technological and political aspects of the smart card technology and its future applications by 2020. Smart card technology turns out to be “citizen friendly” because of the variety of useful services it already provides to citizens in their daily life (health, public transports, travel, e-Administration).

Steering Committee meeting - Announcement of the next General Assembly

Members of the Steering Committee meeting on 1st February 2007 have decided to hold the next General Assembly on 19th April 2007 in Brussels. The smart card industry will deliver its 2006 figures and 2007 forecast in a press conference from 5.00 pm. The Vision Paper 2020 will be launched officially at this occasion and presented by the Chairman Jacques Seneca and the Project managers.

The Steering Committee and Chairman Jacques Seneca thanked Jean-Paul Thomasson, who is retiring from STMicroelectronics, for his strong commitment and important contribution to Eurosmart activities since its creation.

Eurosmart Chairman Jacques Seneca met Director General of DG Infso Fabio Colasanti in Brussels on 10 January 2007.

With the adoption by Member States of the Roadmap for a pan-European eID Management framework (2010), Jacques Seneca reaffirmed the commitment of the smart card industry to help governments in Europe finding interoperable solutions to ensure security, strong authentication, privacy and flexibility. In this respect, Eurosmart promotes the European Citizen Card standard and is willing to share its expertise for the monitoring of a large scale pilot of interoperable eIDMs in cross- border services and the implementation commonly agreed specifications.

On the same day Jacques Seneca also met Jacques Bus , Head of Unit F5 on Security in ICT at DG Infso with Yves Paindaveine, Policy Officer, to discuss the possible funding opportunities for the smart card technology within the FP7 and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme (CIP).

Eurosmart and the Electronic Secured Transactions (TES) Cluster in Basse-Normandie (France), have agreed on a cooperation agreement.

Both associations are concerned by fundamental and strategic issues relating to the information society in a globalise world: security of transactions, protection of privacy, consumers’ rights, traceability... Through this cooperation, both structures will optimise expertise and exchange of views on key issues and reinforce links between their members. In the context of the beginning of the FP7, specific actions are foreseen such as the creation of a common working group on R&D and present common actions to set up European consortiums. This cooperation could also bring to the launch of common events on political aspects, writing common proposals, organisation of meetings in Brussels on dedicated issues.
