2006
in review
> A new Chairman and
a new strategy
Jacques
Seneca, as new Chairman elected on 20 April
2006, decided to enlarge the Steering Committee
to 15 members in order to represent all
segments of the industry: smart cards, semiconductors,
terminals and equipment manufacturers as
well as system integrators.
Jacques Seneca with the newly elected Steering
Committee received mandate from the members
CEO to strengthen the position of
Eurosmart beyond the smart card itself to
cover the smartcard related technologies
in other domains.
A specific eID subgroup
was set in June 2006 to reinforce the message
of interoperability between devices and
continue the effort launched on electronic
identity as well as a specific focus on
harmonised concepts for eGovernment purposes.
Moreover, in order to help the industry
gain visibility and strength in the Information
Technology world, Eurosmart investigates
new form factors using the smart card technology
for strong authentication solutions, such
as secure USB dongles. The New Form
Factor Working Group held its first
meeting in October 2006.
A quarterly Chairman’s Newsletter
was launched in September to inform CEOs
inside the Association and other decision
makers of the latest developments
> A new record for smart card shipments
Smart
card shipments set a new record in 2006
with more than 3.2 billion cards
shipped and 3.7 billion expected in 2007.
In 2006, the activity of the smart card
industry has increased by 27% and should
continue its growth at a 20% rate in 2007.
