Cartes 2004 Press Conference under EUROSMART sponsorship - 29 June in Paris:

The impact of new technologies on individual freedom in the presence of Guy Rosier, Vice-President of the CNIL, French independent authority on personal data protection.

The round table was chaired by Charles Copin who introduced the industry participants: Bernard Didier from Sagem, Georges Kayanakis from ASK, Jean-Claude Deturche from Axalto, Jacques Seneca from Gemplus, Christoph Schiller from G&D, Xavier Fricout from Oberthur CS.

The French legislation adopted in 1978 was the first legislation worldwide to consider the protection of individuals regarding database and information technologies. Such legislation now exists in other European countries with regards to the Directive on personal data protection adopted in 1995. Such authorities are analysing the impact of biometrics, RFID, WiFi, global positioning systems. The smart card as a portable and personal device will respect privacy and security of individuals.

Governments and industry must collaborate on future technologies and their applications.
