3 - 4 March: 4th Contactless and security workshops held in Tokyo,
Japan.
The objectives are to report on the achievements and strengthen
the cooperation. A 2003 work plan was agreed.

at the Tokyo Big Sight.

29 November: The project review held in Brussels was very successful.
The European Commission agreed to extend the project until the
end of 2003, which will allow additional Workshops for the organisation.

major conference gathering R&D managers, administrative and
governmental experts, academic searchers will be held on 3 April
2003 in Brussels - Hotel Mercure Botanique : "From Smart
Card to Trusted Personal Device"
The roadmap
investigates the current and future research and development needs
of the smart card industry and exploit new market opportunities.
If you are working in this sector, please attend this free seminar
to investigate with the industry and research institutes the evolution
of the smart card tool.
Your attendance is important for the validation of this valuable
report and for the identification of future requirements.

RESET is the
first ever made attempt of the smart card industry to assess,
in a global way, its technology priorities and R&D orientations.
The work achieved is preparing the ground for the smart card future
and the new face of technology in 2010.
After 6 months of work, a draft document is available. It will
be sent to the participants in order to obtain their inputs and
comments (available on this web site in a few days).

3-4 April 2003: International CLUB Conference in Capri
- : "What about occasional travellers in ticketing?"
Capri, island of 13 000 inhabitants welcomes a large tourist community
in summer and is an interesting case for occasional travellers
(contactless smartcard and contactless paper ticket exist on the
Capri transport network).

17 December: A mid term review took place in Brussels. The evaluation
of the European Commission is very positive.
A new Contactless Technology website is going to be launched very
soon in the framework of the dissemination plan.

document investigates potential threats applying to contactless
chipcards. The new documents finalised by SINCE participants
should stimulate the smart card community to invest more
in contactless technology especially in the field of security.
In order to better take into account the specifities of
the contactless technology, proposed modification of relevant
protection profiles are listed at the end of the document.

4 February: Communication Working Group - Brussels
2003
Communication programme is ready. Participants reported
on 2002 activities and decided to increase Eurosmart attendance
to international events.
Circulation of information between Eurosmart and member
companies will be improved as well as projects delverables.

February: Strategic Meeting
Members prioritised Eurosmart activities for 2003 : standardise
security at the system level, issue market figures for the
whole industry chain, assess new technological opportunities
and threat, and communicate with the relevant tools.
The structure could be adapted in order to implement the priorities.
The proposals will be discussed during Eurosmart General Assembly.

- Brussels
4
sub-groups will work with laboratories and certification bodies
on the practical implementation of security standards.

February: Production Security - La Ciotat - France
Security Managers of the production sites will organise close
and regular contacts with Payment and GSM regulatory bodies
in order to work together on future Security Standards. |

ISCAN meeting
at CTST is scheduled on the afternoon of May 12 at the Orange
County Convention Center in Orlando.
The agenda
is ambitious: issue a report on Government issued credentials
in the zones covered by the Associations, discuss and compare
smart card shipment figures for the past year, exchange ideas
on future research opportunities.
A press conference on May 13 will present the results of the working
session.

Alliance:
130 participants
attended the Annual Conference in Salt Lake City last month on
"Identity: Technology and policy issues of Trust". It
was the occasion to talk of technical issues but also to present
the major changes inside the Association (new membership categories
and new services - "SmartTalk, a teleconferencing service
to deliver smart card topics of interest and breaking industry
happenings to a global audience - April 3,2003 at 1 pm (US Eastern
time) on contactless payments.
- Smart Card
Forum of China :
February Newsletter issue relates the latest development of the
first citizen card issued in Guangdong (Social Welfare and Security
card) and the rapid growth of mobile subscribers in China (from
18,74 million in 2000 to 65 million in 2002).
- ACT Canada :
Catherine Johnston editorial was based on recent data theft stories
and took this occasion to emphasise on the possibilities offered
by smart card as a counterfeit resistant tool. Consumers are not
only afraid of financial attacks, they are concerned by the steeling
of their personal data.
- The Smart
Card Society of Southern Africa
In its weekly Newsletter the SCSSA enlarges our knowledge of smart
card applications describing the sexiest smart card used in South
Africa's most successful brothel to record the number of clients
...More seriously, the South African Post Office has launched
a Trust Centre close to Cape Town and is now in the position to
issue digital signatures on smart cards next year to offer financial
services and organise in the future government pensions payouts.
