Major decisions for our Association

The General Assembly unanimously welcomed 4 new members that will provide their expertise in specific areas: Inside Contactless, Sitronics Microelectronic and Solicore representing the demand for secure contactless devices and its linked products, Zetes and XPonCard showing the e-ID development of the technology.

An ambitious 3 years action plan, presented by the Chairman, was adopted by all members with corresponding budget.
The evolution of the market shows that the use of the term «smart cards» is neither adequate nor fully representative of the industry any more. Eurosmart represents the smart security technologies family (smart cards, smart USB token, electronic identity documents, Trusted Personal Modules, etc.) and is now acknowledged as “the Voice of the Smart Security Industry”.

Smart Card industry will hit new record in 2007: 4 billion cards expected !

Eurosmart officially announced the figures 2006 and 2007 forecast in a press conference on 19 April in Brussels.

Following a volume of above 3.5 billion in 2006, the activity of the smart secure industry should continue its growth in 2007 at a 16% rate.

Moreover, Eurosmart gives this year a first estimation of various "contactless” applications which represent more than 600M contactless devices, including memory only basic security as well as Secured Contactless Devices such as e-Passports, e-ID cards, EMV contactless cards, but excluding basic physical access control cards.

Presentation of the “Vision Paper 2020”

To go ahead the evolution of our industry, Eurosmart launched a reflection together with a representative panel of experts who widely canvassed opinion via a questionnaire and scrutinized future market needs and consumers expectations.

We successfully delivered a document presenting our vision of the Smart and Secure World in 2020. Smart cards will pioneer the way for “Smart Secure Devices”: new shapes to better fit new types of transactions, new functions (contactless, biometrics, smart agents, web server) and new applications, some still to be invented. Smart Secure Devices will make our life easier, safer and more enjoyable while protecting our privacy.

This “Vision paper 2020” was presented on 19 April 2007 in Brussels to high representative of the European Commission in charge of ICT Security, payments systems, e-ID and e-Passports policies.

The document was also welcomed by the press and other associations and aroused a wide interest.
