5th November: joint meeting scheduled by the European Commission at Directorate General Information Society with DG Justice and Home Affairs in order to present Eurosmart Position Paper on ID applications.

Eurosmart experts from Ingenico, Axalto, G&D, Gemplus, Oberthur CS and Austria card will present the White Paper.

Eurosmart recommends the use of a Smart Card visa for a more secure and privacy respect solution.

Eurosmart Meetings

- CEOs Meeting: CEOs from member companies will gather on November 19 to discuss and validate strategy for 2004.

- General Assembly : 30 members will gather on November 21 for the General Assembly at Axalto Montrouge to report on the past 6 months achievements and organise future political actions towards European Institutions and standardisation bodies (health cards, payment legal framework).

 

ISCI
International Security Certification Initiative

Eurosmart together with Certifications bodies, and evaluation laboratories launched a common initiative, to define and promote a universal framework for security evaluation and certification methods, tools and procedure based on internationally accepted standards.

ISCI partners met on September 16 and will update TB3/JIL documents on evaluation methodology (documents useful inside smart card day to day management of security) with the support of Certification Bodies. Japanese official representatives will be invited at next meeting in November.

FINREAD / Embedded FINREAD

Securing sensitive transactions on the Internet : the emergence of secure
smartcard readers standards to create trust and confidence in electronic
commerce and home banking applications

The FINREAD and Embedded FINREAD specifications will be presented in regards with the US market needs during two free Information Days. Demonstrations of secure transactions on open networks will be conducted during the day on card
readers provided by three different manufacturers (Ingenico, SCM Microsystems and Omnikey).

This free event will be held in San Francisco on Monday, November 10, 2003 (Sofitel San Francisco Bay) and in New York City, on Friday, November 14, 2003 (Le Parker Meridien New York).

News from the ISCAN network

- ACT Canada Newsletter announces that the Canadian government is exploring the use of biometric identifiers on a variety of ID cards and documents, according to Denis Coderre, minister of Citizenship and Immigration. Ministry sources say they expect a mandate to begin work on ID documents carrying biometrics within a month.

- Smart Card Forum of China Newsletter relates major conferences organised in October, the fifth Smart Cards + Smart Label, China & Users’ Conference 2003 attended by over 600 delegates from 20 countries and 80 exhibitors. The other important conference was 2nd Asia Pacific Forum on Smart National ID and E-passport, which was jointly organized by Asia Pacific Smart Card Association-APSCA, China National Registration Center of IC Cards and Smart Card Forum of China – SCFC. This Forum attracted 60 official delegates from 18 countries and over 50 corporate delegates for a three-days’ conference focusing on the implementation of smart cards in national ID and passports.

- Smart Card Alliance conference was a success and marked an important transition for the management of the Smart Card Alliance as Paul Beverly's two-year reign as Chairman officially came to an end. The newly elected board unanimously voted Kevin Gillick, Head of Corporate Marketing for Datacard Group, to be the next Chairman of the Alliance.
