Electronic Identity

Eurosmart e-ID Working Group
The Working Group on electronic identity was created in June 2006 firstly as a subgroup of the Market and Technology Working Group to focus on all marketing and technical needs related to e-ID. Now a proper Working Group of the Association, it operates lobbying actions in order to promote solutions for the interoperability between secure devices and common specifications for e-Government purposes (e-Driving Licenses, e-ID, e-Health cards, e-Passports, etc.). Regular meetings with European Institutions officials are the opportunity for the eID Working Group to present the innovative and secure solutions that are offered by the Smart Security industry in this field.

Bruno Rouchouze is the current convenor of the Working Group.

Position Paper "European Citizen Card: One Pillar of Interoperable eID Success" (October 2008)
As electronic passports have been successfully deployed and e-ID documents projects have been flourishing across the EU Member States, the challenges linked to interoperability of solutions and systems are all the more increasing. To overcome national barriers while complying with the requirements of ensuring security and offering electronic services to citizens, Eurosmart proposed to use the standardisation work made at CEN and to promote the European Citizen Card.
This is the proposal that was made by the e-ID Working Group in its Position Paper on the ECC standard. After giving an overview of the ongoing and future e-ID projects in the different EU Member States, the Position Paper points out the advantages and added-value of smart card technologies for e-ID interoperable EU wide systems. It also gives an all-comprehensive description of the ECC, as well as current profiles and specifications.

This position of Eurosmart was also conveyed in the article that was published by the e-ID Working Group in the ENISA's Quartely Review. Entitled "e-ID interoperability: the key for success", this article presents the added-value for the ECC standard for ensuring the deployment of interoperable ID documents throughout the EU.

Position Paper on eDriving License (September 2008)

As e-Passports have been successfully deployed and national e-ID cards projects are multiplying, electronic driving licences are set to follow a similar trend. Eurosmart experts also formulate some recommendations in order to secure and promote identity documents, and ensure their interoperable development throughout the European Union.

White Paper on Smart Card Durability (July 2008)
When launching a new e-ID smart card program, governments are faced with many trade-offs. The right combination of components for the complete use chain must indeed be carefully selected and qualified to ensure that the card will meet the extended life requirements of government e-ID cards and does not have to be reissued before its expected life time. Drivers influencing smart card type selection, card body materials, personalization techniques, physical and mechanical factors affecting card durability, durability testing standards, these are all aspects that are examined by the White Paper on the Durability of Smart card for government e-ID that has been published by Eurosmart e-ID Working Group in July 2008.
