Market and Technology Working Group

 

The Market Analysis team is the core of the Market and Technology WG. It analyses, on a semi-annual basis, the actual shipments and forecasts of the Smart Security Industry, highlighting new trends and creating adequate segmentation.
Figures are based on the actual shipments of the members correlated with market data from both semiconductor and smart security industry sources. View the last issue of market overview.

The group is mainly composed of Marketing and Market Research senior experts from our members.

Oyvind Rastad is the current convenor of the group.

 

 

Eurosmart figures on Smart Cards global shipment and 2011 forecast


mb-wcs2010At the Wolrd Card Summit (Cartes 2010), Eurosmart Chairman Marc Bertin presented the new market vision of Smart Cards shipments in 2010 as well as 2011 forecasts. The Smart Security Industry has confirmed its dynamism in 2010 and will pass the 5 billion microcontroller based Smart Secure Devices this year. 4.5 billion units of Smart Secure Devices were shipped in 2009, and we anticipate that number to grow by 18% in 2010 to exceed 5.3 billion units. Over 4 billion SIM cards have been shipped in 2010 and over 1 billion payment cards are expected in 2011. The proportion of contactless cards is growing, especially dual cards combining both contact and contactless.

Eurosmart White Paper on "Smart Biometrics for Trust and Convenience"

The White paper on biometrics covers state-of-the-art biometric technology, best use cases and technical implementation choices when combined with smart card technology. The study also involves the concept of creating biometric characteristics for physical documents, identification of use cases and techniques, and finally the benefits of putting together human and physical document biometric characteristics. It also makes recommendations on the use of biometrics for cases of identification and authentication of individuals and goods.

Mr. Axel Deininger, Head of Payment Division Cards and Services at Giesecke & Devrient, represented Eurosmart and made a presentation on "Smart Biometrics for trust and convenience" at OMNICARD 2011, in Berlin, in January 2011.

During Cartes & IDentification 2010, Didier Chaudun, the convenor of the Biometrics taskforce at Eurosmart, made an interview on the French radio BFM. This interview was the opportunity to present Eurosmart vision on privacy and security aspects of biometrics.

Eurosmart Position Paper on "NFC Trends"

While NFC is at the center of all the questions and strategies emerging today, Eurosmart has published a Position Paper on "NFC Trends". Its aim is to give an objective and prospective vision of NFC markets and trends, and deliver a shared vision of the pathway to finally arrive at commercial deployment.

Eurosmart Presentation on markets and trends of contactless smart devices

On behalf of Eurosmart, Mr. Rémy de Tonnac gave a presentation during ICTF 2009 (International Contactless Technologies Forum) in Marseille, on 16 June 2009. The document presents markets and trends for contactless smart devices.

Task Force on Biometry

 

Considering the recent attractiveness of biometry in Eurosmart members' markets, the association decided to establish a Task Force within the Market & Technology Working Group. This new Biometry Task Force will develop a vision of the state-of-the-art biometry technology and best use cases, as well as technical choices of implementation when in combined with smart card technology.

 

At Cartes 2010, Eurosmart ran live demonstrations including an enrolment station and March-on-Card on different uses cases. http://www.eurosmart.com/index.php/live-demos/136-live-demos.html.

Smart Security Segmentation Task Force

The role of Eurosmart is to make sure that security is well positioned and valued. Based on a risk management approach, Eurosmart goes deeper in the analysis and proposes a segmentation of smart card devices depending on security requirements. Consequently, Eurosmart founded a new initiative: the Smart Security Segmentation TaskForce. The goals are to educate on security risks, to explain how to choose the right level of security and to produce guidelines and deliver a clear message promoting security in the whole chain. The Group consists of an interdisciplinary team of Marketing and Security Experts from the Eurosmart members.
