Eurosmart General Assembly Confirms Strong Growth
Focus on smart security solutions improving the usability of digital services while protecting privacy and combating fraud
Brussels, April 23rd 2013 – At its annual General Assembly in Brussels on April 23rd, Eurosmart, the voice of the smart security industry, released the 2012 shipments figures as well as the 2013 forecast for the worldwide smart secure devices shipments and the smart secure contactless markets. Eurosmart also outlined its focus for 2013 which will continue to be on serving the ever increasing need for securing transactions in the digital world while integrating the latest technological innovations.
“The Smart Security Industry shows good growth perspectives in 2013”, states Oyvind Rastad, Eurosmart’s chairman. “Shipments in 2012 were up 11% from the year before and we are expecting another increase of around 9% this year. This is driven by a number of factors. One is the increasing number of secure e-documents like eID cards, electronic health cards and drivers’ licenses. The second one is the EMV migration in Asia and Latin America as well as in the US. Last but not least, comparatively new technologies like 4G and Near Field Communication (NFC) are driving growth. For NFC alone we see an increase of approximately 67 percent, from 150 million Secure Elements shipped in 2012 to our forecast of 250 million units to be shipped in 2013. Altogether, these developments show the continuing trend toward the digitalization of all aspects of our lives, in all parts of the world. This in turn drives the need for infrastructure and system upgrades, opening tremendous opportunities for the smart security industry”.
According to Rastad, our society faces the growing challenge of enjoying the benefits of being increasingly interconnected while, at the same time, having to safeguard privacy and trust. Eurosmart will continue promoting smart security solutions that aim to improve the usability of digital services while protecting privacy and combating fraud.
Details on the forecast for 2013 are listed below.

Figures 2010
Eurosmart presents twice a year its market analysis and vision of the Smart Security market worldwide.
May 2011 : Strong volume growth momentum in 2010 and a positive start in 2011
At the General Assembly (3 May 2011, Brussels), Eurosmart has increased the final figure for shipments in Telecom market segment in 2010 to 4.2 billion; thereby bringing the total shipment of microcontroller based Smart Secure Devices to above 5.5 billion in 2010. While it is still early days to make a final forecast for 2011, we feel confident that the 6 billion bar will be crossed. All the segments show double digit volume growth again this year (see the tables below).
Analysis of major growth drivers:
Telecom
- Despite even higher deliveries than anticipated in 2010, Eurosmart still expects around 10% SIM shipments growth in 2011 due to the continued strong growth in India, Indonesia, China and Brazil
- The global trend for mobile financial services increases the need for security, and demand for higher end products
- M2M generates great interest, especially in the automotive and smart metering verticals
Banking-Retail
- Worldwide EMV migration continues to sustain strong growth, in particular in Latin America and Asia
- Security needs fuel the global migration to DDA
- Strong dual interface (contact & contactless) cards growth. NFC development will participate to this trend.
Government ID-Healthcare
- Increasing deployment of eID cards and the European Resident Permit
- Developing countries benefit from eID for welfare management, census and voting
Contactless
- Strong dynamism of NFC in 2011, with multiple commercial deployments happening worldwide. Eurosmart will update its market forecast for 2011 in September.
- Growth of dual interface (contact & contactless) is higher than pure contactless.
- American contactless cards issuers are reviewing their future product roadmap linked to the ongoing EMV migration discussion.

Comments
Telecom:
We anticipate a growth in volumes during FY2009 in the range of 3% to 9% compared to FY2008, i.e between 3300Mu and 3500Mu. Emerging markets continue to fuel the growth in volume with, for instance, millions of new subscribers in India and 3G deployments in Brazil and in China. Mature markets experience a new trend around SIM based assets: MNO SIM-only offers for post-paid subscriptions.
Financial Services:
In addition to the EMV migration that continues to spread worldwide, we see a stronger growth than initially anticipated (11/2009) in Contactless payment cards (the 100 Million cards in the field should be achieved in the course of 2009).
Eurosmart members revised the 2009 forecast from 700 Mu to 730 Mu.
Government:
The adoption of Travel Documents (Passports) is getting global (the 100 countries mark will be achieved in the course of 2009). Eurosmart maintains its conservative forecast issued in November 2008 even though this segment is the most likely to deliver upsides in the course of 2009.
Figures 2009
All market segments showed positive volume growth in 2009, demonstrating the resilience and capacity of innovation of our Industry. The main sources of growth by market segment were:
Telecom
– GSM penetration in emerging markets is fueling steady growth in volume.
– In mature markets such as Europe and the USA, the market growth comes from services requiring additional SIM cards, i.e. subscribers using more than one SIM card in additional devices such as netbooks and USB 3G+ keys and from machine to machine (M2M).
Financial services
– Sustainable growth opportunities thanks to EMV migration, given the fact that only 20% of the cards already deployed in this segment are chip cards;
– Second driver is contactless dual interface that enable convenient and fast payment and mass transit applications;
– Retailers offer innovative payments and loyalty services that will contribute to contactless acceptance.
Government and Healthcare
– Multiplication of Government ID tenders worldwide and continuous e-Passport deployment;
– Other ID applications such as driving licenses, healthcare and electronic services to citizens are participating to the solid growth of this market segment;
– Biometry is a vector of innovation in this area.
Eurosmart presents twice a year its market analysis and vision of the Smart Security market worldwide.
Eurosmart figures for 2009 global smart cards shipments, including secure contactless and 2010 forecast are presented in the tables below. The memory based smart security devices have largely been overtaken by the more secure and versatile microprocessor based smart security devices. In the future, Eurosmart will therefore not detail the corresponding shipments and forecasts.
