Figures
Eurosmart presents twice a year its market analysis and vision of the Smart Security market worldwide.
Opening the World Card Summit (Paris) on 15 November 2011, Eurosmart confirmed that over 6 billion microprocessor based smart secure devices will be shipped this year. Double digit growth in the telecom, banking and government segments is set to continue in 2012.
Analysis of major growth drivers:
Telecom
- Still strong growth in developing markets (India, CIS, Latin America)
- M2M is opening new applications and expanding the smart security market, for instance into the automotive, consumer electronics and healthcare sectors
- LTE is launched in more than 20 countries, enabling more feature-rich IP services
NFC
- NFC commercial deployment started in 2011 with NFC enabled handsets and infrastructure available
- Strong growth will happen in 2012. Payment and ticketing are leading applications
- Eurosmart expects secure NFC devices to be in the range of 80 to 120mu in 2012
o This forecast includes only standard NFC, excluding notably Felica
- Such strong growth will depend on:
o MNOs and banks aggressively market NFC services
o Leading handset manufacturers include NFC in all smart phones
Banking-Retail
- EMV migration in Latin America and China is driving growth. India is set to become the next big country to migrate, potentially with the US in the long term
- Dual interface contact & contactless continues its strong growth
Government ID-Healthcare
- Strong growth in National eID programs (Asia, Africa, Latam)
- Smart healthcare programs continue to contribute to growth, for instance with the current deployment in Germany
Multi-application contactless
- There is a clear trend of multi-application contactless cards combining two or more of identity, payment, social benefits and transport services on a single card
New market opportunities
With the growing number of online services and the advent of the Internet of things, Eurosmart sees a clear trend of increasing security demands in addition to the established smart card based applications. For example, this includes embedded secure elements and the associated secure remote management solutions for smart metering, eCall, smart grid and cloud computing. Based on our history, the smart security industry is well positioned to provide convenient and secure solutions and services for these new markets.
Our forecasts for 2011 and 2012 global smart cards shipments, including secure contactless, are presented in the tables below:

See Eurosmart market figures of 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004-1999.
Figures 2010
Eurosmart presents twice a year its market analysis and vision of the Smart Security market worldwide.
December 2010 : Strong volume growth this year and excellent perspectives for 2011
The Smart Security Industry has confirmed its dynamism in 2010 and will pass the 5 billion microcontroller based Smart Secure Devices this year. 4.5 billion units of Smart Secure Devices were shipped in 2009, and we anticipate that number to grow by 18% in 2010 to exceed 5.3 billion units. Over 4 billion SIM cards have been shipped in 2010 and over 1 billion payment cards are expected in 2011. The proportion of Contactless cards is growing, especially dual card combining both contact and contactless.
In addition to the traditional Smart Secure Devices market, exciting new possibilities have started to materialize in 2010. For instance, with the growth in Machine to Machine, embedded mobile connectivity is already delivering new benefits to consumers and businesses, just like mobile phones do and have done for over 15 years. And as objects become Smart and start to communicate with each other with or without human intervention, we are beginning to see how the future Internet of Things may reshape our society.
To make the best of these opportunities, the right balance between convenience, privacy and security must be found. The Smart Security Industry has a long experience in implementing the right technologies to achieve this objective. The combination of biometrics with Smart Secure Device technology is offering particularly interesting perspectives in this respect.
The following are the major growth drivers per segment:
Telecom
• SIM shipments benefit from strong growth in China, India, Indonesia and Brazil, with 3G in India being a driver for larger memory size
• Mobile financial services to increase security needs and demand for higher end products
• M2M and embedded mobile connectivity generate great interest
Banking-Retail
• Worldwide EMV and DDA migration benefit from strong growth in Latin America and Asia
• Strong dual contact and contactless cards growth
Government ID-Healthcare
• Increasing deployment of eID cards and the European Resident Permit
• European initiatives drive provision of e-Services for citizens' convenience and administration savings, requiring secure identification
• USA visa waiver program and European Union directive on biometrics e-Passport increase penetration of high-end security technology
Contactless Smart Secure Device
• Around 15 Mu NFC secure elements are expected to be shipped, mainly by MNOs in Asia and Europe in 2011
• Growth of dual (contact and contactless) is higher than pure contactless
• 20% of Banking-Retail cards have contactless interface in 2010, 22% in 2011
• Emergence of microcontroller based cards combining transit and a second application
The following tables show (1) Microprocessor worldwide volumes shipments in Millions Units (Mu) for both 2010 and 2011 by market segments and (2) the portion of those that are contactless cards.

Secure contactless market overview 2008
(General Assembly, Brussels, 30 April 2009)

Comments
Telecom:
We anticipate a growth in volumes during FY2009 in the range of 3% to 9% compared to FY2008, i.e between 3300Mu and 3500Mu. Emerging markets continue to fuel the growth in volume with, for instance, millions of new subscribers in India and 3G deployments in Brazil and in China. Mature markets experience a new trend around SIM based assets: MNO SIM-only offers for post-paid subscriptions.
Financial Services:
In addition to the EMV migration that continues to spread worldwide, we see a stronger growth than initially anticipated (11/2009) in Contactless payment cards (the 100 Million cards in the field should be achieved in the course of 2009).
Eurosmart members revised the 2009 forecast from 700 Mu to 730 Mu.
Government:
The adoption of Travel Documents (Passports) is getting global (the 100 countries mark will be achieved in the course of 2009). Eurosmart maintains its conservative forecast issued in November 2008 even though this segment is the most likely to deliver upsides in the course of 2009.
Figures 2009
All market segments showed positive volume growth in 2009, demonstrating the resilience and capacity of innovation of our Industry. The main sources of growth by market segment were:
Telecom
– GSM penetration in emerging markets is fueling steady growth in volume.
– In mature markets such as Europe and the USA, the market growth comes from services requiring additional SIM cards, i.e. subscribers using more than one SIM card in additional devices such as netbooks and USB 3G+ keys and from machine to machine (M2M).
Financial services
– Sustainable growth opportunities thanks to EMV migration, given the fact that only 20% of the cards already deployed in this segment are chip cards;
– Second driver is contactless dual interface that enable convenient and fast payment and mass transit applications;
– Retailers offer innovative payments and loyalty services that will contribute to contactless acceptance.
Government and Healthcare
– Multiplication of Government ID tenders worldwide and continuous e-Passport deployment;
– Other ID applications such as driving licenses, healthcare and electronic services to citizens are participating to the solid growth of this market segment;
– Biometry is a vector of innovation in this area.
Eurosmart presents twice a year its market analysis and vision of the Smart Security market worldwide.
Eurosmart figures for 2009 global smart cards shipments, including secure contactless and 2010 forecast are presented in the tables below. The memory based smart security devices have largely been overtaken by the more secure and versatile microprocessor based smart security devices. In the future, Eurosmart will therefore not detail the corresponding shipments and forecasts.
