Definitive Adoption of EU Data Privacy Rules

14 April 2016

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been finally approved by the European Parliament on 14 April 2016.

After an inter-institutional agreement was found in December 2015, the GDPR has been finally adopted by all MEPs during the plenary session of the EP in Strasbourg. Jan Philipp Albrecht, Rapporteur on the GDPR, claimed that "this will be a major step forward for consumer protection and competition (...) the new rules will give users back the right to decide on their own private data".

The new EU-wide privacy rules will come into force in 2018.
