The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has published its opinion on personal information management systems (PIMS) in order for individuals to control the sharing of their personal data and their online identity.
The EDPS welcomes the recently adopted General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – it will strengthen the trust and confidence online and increase control over personal data - but more should be done to ensure that individuals are able to take back control of their online identities.
In this opinion, the EDPS briefly describes the emerging technology of PIMS which gives individuals and consumers the possibility to store their personal data in online storage systems. It will create new business opportunities for PIMS providers, who would act as intermediaries between the individual and the online services they use. Giovanni Buttarelli, EDPS,encourages the Commission to support the development of such innovative digital tools.
