Commission President suggests creating a EU-US Trade and Technology Council

On 20 January, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, gave a speech to the European Parliament. This took place in the context of Joe Biden’s inauguration. Ursula von der Leyen gave details on her views on the future of transatlantic relations.

On technology, Ursula von der Leyen stated that Europe’s approach can be an inspiration for everyone, for instance with the GDPR. The President also said that she can imagine a joint Trade and Technology Council. The EU and the US could together create a “digital economy rulebook” that would be valid worldwide. The rulebook would, for instance, cover data protection, privacy, and security of critical infrastructure.
