Commission requests ENISA to prepare a 5G certification scheme

Today [3 February], the European Commission officially requested ENISA to prepare a cybersecurity certification scheme for 5G networks. This would make the 5G scheme the third European scheme following the adoption of the Cybersecurity Act, after the EUCC scheme and the cloud scheme.

According to the Commission’s statement, this scheme will address risks related to technical vulnerabilities of the networks. The Commission observes that there are at the moment various schemes for IT products, including 5G networks. Therefore, this scheme will also reduce fragmentation.

According to ENISA, the scheme will be based on provisions already available by means of cybersecurity certifications schemes.

Next steps:

-An ad-hoc working group for the 5G scheme will be established.

-The Commission will soon adopt its first Union Rolling Work Programme for cybersecurity certification. Eurosmart, as a member of the SCCG, contributed to the drafting of this Programme.
