New European Partnership on Key Digital Technologies
Yesterday [23 February], the European Commission announced the creation of 10 new European Partnerships between the European Union, Member States, and/or the industry. One of this Partnership would considerably support the semiconductor industry.
European Partnerships are envisaged by the Horizon Europe funding programme. They aim to mobilise public and private resources. For these 10 new Partnerships, the EU will provide nearly 10 billion euros of funding. Partners are expected to match at least an equivalent amount of investments.
The following Partnerships are set up:
· Global Health EDCTP3
· Innovative Health Initiative
· Key Digital Technologies (including semiconductors)
· Circular Bio-based Europe
· Clean Hydrogen
· Clean Aviation
· Europe's Rail
· Single European Sky ATM Research 3
· Smart Networks and Services
· Metrology
The Partnership on Key Digital Technologies (KDT) aims at ensuring Europe’s digital sovereignty. Microelectronics, including semiconductor components, is an important sector that this Partnership will develop. It will build on the ESCEL Joint Undertaking.
The Commission’s press release underlines that Europe accounts for 9-10% of global production of electronic components. This was only 6% in 2016, but this figure improved thanks to ECSEL.
The Commission would contribute 1,8 billion euros between 2021 and 2027 for this KDT Partnership. Participating Member States would make a similar contribution and the private sector would contribute around 2,5 billion euros via the industrial associations: AENEAS, ARTEMISIA and EPoSS.
