Diplomats of the Council reject the Intelligent transport system delegated act
EU diplomats of the Council of the European Union today rejected the proposed delegated act on ITS deployment. The draft delegated act on Intelligence transport system sought to set Wi-Fi-based communication standards for connected cars.
A total 21 countries voted against the text.
This vote complies with request from the telecommunications stakeholders to review the proposal which would fail at at maintaining a technology neutral approach. The European Commission had maintained that the standards were needed to push automated technology forward.
Spain and Germany were asking for a bigger role for cellular-based systems in any EU standards. A swing majority has been gathered to reject the legal validity of the act.
BMW, Deutsche Tekekom (see statement) supported by telecom industry groups: ETNO, GSA, GSMA and the automotive organisation 5GAA (see statement), have been advocated hard to reject the proposal. On the contrary, carmakers such as Volkswagen and Toyota and road charging infrastructure producers such as Kapsch were in favor of the plan.
Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc said she would work with the Council on a way forward, adding that the rules were needed now to deploy road safety applications.
