EU funding: Agreement on Connecting Europe Facility
On 11 March, the Council announced that it reached a provisional agreement with the European Parliament on Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). CEF is an EU funding programme with an allocated budget of over 30 billion euros for 2021-2027.
CEF funds projects in three areas: transport, energy and digital infrastructure networks. CEF Digital (the digital strand of CEF) has a budget of over 2 billion euros. It will support projects that develop connectivity infrastructures, such as 5G networks. Priority will be given to projects which generate additional area coverage, including for households.
Once officially adopted by the Council and the European Parliament, CEF will apply retroactively from 1 January 2021. Calls for proposals will be launched by the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA).
