Priorities of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU
On 1 July, Slovenia took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU, following the Portuguese Presidency. It recently presented its priorities for this six-month Presidency.
Cybersecurity is one of the key priorities of the Slovenian Presidency. Slovenia wants to strengthen resilience and ensure an effective response to major cyberattacks and crises. The Presidency will focus on critical infrastructures and the digital single market. More particularly, it will coordinate the Council’s position on NIS 2 and on the Directive on the resilience of critical entities. In parallel, it will carry out activities regarding the security of connected devices, the development of cybersecurity certification schemes, the establishment of the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre, and the security of 5G networks.
Slovenia will also take care of the implementation of the updated industrial strategy. This strategy aims to reinforce the EU’s strategic autonomy and technological sovereignty. Slovenia will also work on reducing the EU’s dependency on key raw materials, including through better recycling.
On Artificial Intelligence, the Slovenian Presidency will focus on making progress on the Artificial Intelligence Act. It will also continue consideration of the Data Governance Act and launch deliberations on the Data Act. The Slovenian Presidency will organise a high-level conference on AI in September.
In addition, the Slovenian Presidency will continue deliberations on the eID Regulation.
