UK likely to diverge from EU privacy standards due to Trans-Pacific Agreement

The UK is currently in the process of joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. This means that it will have to align its standards accordingly, especially in terms of privacy and agriculture and food standards. The pacific block seeks to impose its more relaxed standards on new members.

The UK joining the Partnership could result problematic as some countries, like Brunei and Vietnam, have weaker data protection systems. The UK data would flow to such countries.

The UK has already announced in August that it would diverge from the EU’s privacy standards. This situation put into question the data flow agreement (adequacy deal) that the UK currently has with the EU.
