EU Member States discussed the Artificial Intelligence Act

On 14 October, EU ministers responsible for telecommunication and information society discussed the proposal for an AI Act.

Ministers agreed on the need to have a human-centric and horizontal regulation for AI. They also stressed that the regulation should be balanced to avoid stifling innovation. Ministers underlined the importance of standardisation and availability of high-quality data. The administrative and financial burden for operators, in particular SMEs, should be kept to a minimum.

Ministers believe that many issues require further discussion, in particular regarding definitions, the scope of the AI Act, and law enforcement aspects.

The Slovenian Presidency plans on presenting a first compromise proposal by the end of this year.
