Digital Markets Act: MEPs adopt the text during plenary session

On 15 December, MEPs voted in favour of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) during their plenary session. 642 MEPs voted in favour, 8 against and 46 abstained.

This adoption follows a favourable vote in the IMCO Committee.

The DMA aims to ensure fair competition in digital markets. More particularly, it places obligations on ā€œgatekeepersā€ (operating systems, big platforms etc.), such as the obligation to allow users to uninstall software.

The DMA is also key for digital identity; it should enable providers of identification services to access the needed operating system, hardware and software features. However, the current phrasing of the DMA remains unclear. Eurosmart is drafting a position paper on this topic.

Please find below the text that was adopted yesterday.

This week, the Digital Services Act (DSA) also made progress. MEPs from the IMCO Committee adopted the DSA. The DSA targets illegal content on big platforms.

Next steps:

Negotiations with Member States (the Council) will start next year.
