AI Act: The European Parliament organises itself

There is now a clearer picture of the MEPs in charge of the AI Act in the European Parliament.

MEP Brando Benifei (S&D, Italy) is the main rapporteur in the Committee for Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO).  MEP Dragos Tudorache (Renew, Romania) is the main rapporteur in the Committee for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). IMCO and LIBE are jointly leading the negotiations on the AI Act.

MEP Axel Voss (EPP, Germany) has been named rapporteur in the Legal Affairs Committee (JURI). The JURI Committee has an exclusive say on articles concerning transparency obligations for certain AI systems, human oversight, codes of conduct and provision of information to users. MEP Axel Voss has extensively worked on liability and AI during the past few years.

MEP Eva Maydell (EPP, Bulgaria) will take the lead in the Committee for Industry and Research (ITRE). The ITRE Committee has an exclusive say on robustness and cybersecurity, and accuracy. The ITRE Committee will also take part in the negotiations on data governance, conformity and definition of an AI system.

Next steps:

The IMCO and LIBE committees want to have a first draft report by early April. Subsequently, other committees would be able to submit their opinions by June. A final vote in plenary is scheduled on November 9.
