European Chips Act to be unveiled next week

The European Commission will unveil its European Chips Act next week, most likely on 8 February. Commissioner Thierry Breton indicated that Europe should become a net exporter of chips. Some measures will be directly inspired by the US Defense Production Act.

Thus, the proposal would include monitoring mechanisms of the supply chain. Europe would also be able to put pressure on other regions to continue supplying chips in times of crisis (similar to what Europe put in place for vaccines).

In addition, Thierry Breton underlined that the European Chips Act will contain an attractive investment framework for mega fab production facilities. The Commission notably wants to trigger investment in leading-edge technology.

Ultimately, Europe should represent 20% of the chip’s global markets in 2030, up from 10% today.
