Czech Presidency in sight: Digital priorities
The Czech Presidency will start on 1 July and Czechia has already unveiled its priorities:
-Managing the refugee crisis and Ukraine’s post-war recovery
-Energy security
-Strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities and cyberspace security
-Strategic resilience of the European economy
-Resilience of democratic institutions
The Czech Presidency will focus on reinforcing security and defence capabilities, in particular in partnership with NATO. The Czech Presidency also aims to reduce technological dependence (e.g. for 5G) and to ensure the resilience of critical value chains. In this respect, Czechia would like to strengthen related industrial capacities in the EU. The Czech Presidency will also pay particular attention to the cybersecurity of EU institutions and to the EU space-based secure communication system.
Regarding strategic resilience, Czechia underlines that “the EU must drastically reduce its dependence on hostile or unstable regimes”. However, “striving for full self-sufficiency does not seem to be an immediately viable option for the EU”. Therefore, Czechia concludes that the EU must not only strengthen its own production capacities but also deepen free trade with democratic nations in the world. The Czech Presidency also mentions the EU-US Trade and Technology Council.
The Czech Presidency will also strive for the adoption of the European Digital Identity Wallet and the creation of “an efficient and fair data market”.
Czechia will organise the Prague Cybersecurity Conference on 3-4 November as part of their Presidency. The event will leverage the 2021 Prague proposals on cybersecurity of emerging and disruptive technologies.
